What is phlebotomy?

What is Phlebotomy anyway?

Phlebotomy is the act or practice of bloodletting as a therapeutic measure.

In laymans terms, for you and me, that means collecting blood from patients that have been sent to you by their doctor or medical practitioner.

A phlebotomist is the person qualified and given the responsibility of taking that blood from the patient and sending it onto the hospital laboratory for diagnosis.

The health and state of someone’s blood will tell the doctor the health of their body and usually highlight what they may be suffering from.

Phlebotomy is usually carried out in a hospital or clinic environment or even at your doctor’s surgery. Occasionally, by doctor’s request, a you, as the phlebotomist can even visit the patient in their home to collect the blood, especially if they are too ill or weak to attend at the hospital, but this is very rare.

Most doctors surgeries these days run phlebotomy clinics once or twice a week where parients will visit the surgery just to give their blood. This is different from blood donation where the giver is giving away blood to be used by someone else in need of it. A phlebotomist collects blood so it can be examined in a laboratory to check how healthy the patient is.

There are many different tests done on your blood these days to really find out the health of your blood. A phlebotomist usually doesn’t get involved in the diagnosis or analysis. Instead, the phlebotomist’s job is to take the blood is as healthy and comfortable way possible from the patient.

A phlebotomist usually takes up to 30 to 50 samples in a full-day so you can rest assured they have lots and lots of experience.

These days blood collection has changed from being therapeutic to being diagnostic and there are many different types of diagnostic tests available. Phlebotomists have become key players on health care team and also play an important role in the health center.

The job of the phlebotomist is to provide specimens for accurate and reliable test results as quickly as possible. The blood sample is labelled and sent to the lab usually the same day where it will be examined.

Phlebotomists are professionals and must conduct themselves accordingly. They must maintain a clean and neat appearance and must treat the patient with a gentle touch in a calm and unhurried manner. Customer satisfaction plays a big role in being a successful phlebotomist.

Hello there, it's Mr. Aquib. I came here into the Maxis Health Center for a phlebotomy course, and we had an intense course today, which is very lovely. The lady who taught our class, her name is Kate, she is from Oxford and she is very experienced, I would say more than 30 years. She reflected her experience very well to us and we enjoyed it, the atmosphere was very friendly, and Dr. Shema was very friendly as well, and very helpful from every aspect. I would like to thank the whole team. I was a bit nervous though, but I enjoyed the course. When I was doing the practical on that woman I was a bit nervous, but now I'm feeling comfortable and knowledgeable as well, and I am aware of the procedures and I am looking forward to being a phlebotomist. Thank you.

I’m from Nigeria, where I trained and I studied, and I studied and graduated as a medical doctor. The course was very wonderful. We had a very experienced instructor and she did a very great job in breaking down the whole of the phlebotomy skills, and also she was very open and kind to everybody. She said things that were very encouraging and positive. So I think on the whole, at the end of the day, I gained quite a bit from the training, and I would recommend it to other people as well.

Hi. It's Ethan [___], I'm from Bangladesh. I used to be a project manager back in my country. Here I am working at business developing for the Torina training company. I was just looking around and browsing on the internet about this Maxis Healthcare Limited, where I got to know about phlebotomy. When I started this course early in the morning, I didn't think that this could be so easily taught by my course instructor, the person, the instructor, Kate, is a very lovely person. She is so experienced. I didn't realize that it's a seven hour's course, but it's a really, really nice experience for me, and after the course work and the practice, I really didn't think that I could do well. This is the perfect experience that everyone should look for because the phlebotomist, everyone should have that quality or anything like that--I didn't believe that after doing this course from Maxis Healthcare Limited, so this is a perfect exposure, I might say, that people should do.

    Mr. Ethan
Although I had some instruction in phlebotomy in medical school, I felt that my phlebotomy skills could still be improved. This course was run in a very structured and easy to understand manner. The lecturer had a very good style of delivery of lectures and the sessions were quite interactive. I learnt a lot about other aspects of phlebotomy such as the importance of establishing good rapport with the patient so as to reduce their anxiety and fears when undergoing blood tests. **CLICK HERE TO READ MORE**
